I’ve known and worked with Deborah for three decades, and it’s because of her I found the courage to write and direct documentaries.  Deborah was “born” into the world of docs, learning from her father (a cameraman for the DND), and later becoming assistant camera to great talents like John Walker.   Her instinctive and beautiful filmmaking is enhanced by her compassion and empathy.  Deb just feels things, going for heart and  this shows in all aspects of her work, from the first film she ever shot - our film “Shahira” for which she won Best Cinematography Award from the Canadian Cinematographer Association (the first woman to do so!) - to her work today.

Over the years Deb has learned all aspects of documentary filmmaking, first as DOP on award winning films like “Talk Sixteen” then as an analyst at Telefilm Canada, then back  to the independent world as a production manager and producer, supporting some of Canada’s top filmmakers including John Zaritsky, John Kastner, Jari Osbourne and Maryanne Alton.  The films she has helped produce have won numerous awards, including Canadian Screen Awards, Hot Docs Awards and Emmys.  A few years ago I was privileged and excited to watch Deb pick up a camera again – filming with me on location in India and in Canada.
